What Causes Blurry Vision?

Blurry vision can be caused by a number of different things. Some cases are simple, like eyestrain and dry eyes, while others are more complex and may require treatment with prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses.

Some common causes of blurry vision include:

Dry eyes:  A condition in which tear production is disrupted, causing eyes to become dry and irritated.

Diabetic retinopathy: A complication of diabetes that damages the retina at the back of the eye and can lead to vision loss if left untreated.

Glaucoma: A condition usually caused by raised pressure inside the eye that damages nerve cells in the retina, causing loss of peripheral (side) vision and sometimes total blindness if left untreated.

Macular degeneration: A condition that destroys central vision, making it difficult to see objects clearly straight ahead (such as when reading). Macular degeneration usually occurs when you are older but can occur earlier in people with certain types of inherited conditions.

Eye health is one of the most important aspects of your overall health. If you experience blurry vision, it might be important to make an appointment with an eye doctor to diagnose and treat the problem before it gets worse.

Signs to look out for include:

  • Eye pain or discomfort
  • Burning sensation in your eyes
  • A gritty feeling in your eyes
  • Painful dryness in your eyes
  • Redness of the whites of the eye

How Is Blurry Vision Treated?

Blurry vision can often be corrected with prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses. Our optometrist might use an eye exam to get a better understanding of your condition. After we understand your condition, we can develop a personalized treatment plan that may include eyeglasses, lifestyle changes, and more.
