Cataracts

General Information

Cataracts is a condition that occurs when the lens of your eye becomes blurry. Typically, the lens of an eye is clear, and you see without any problems, that is unless you have another eye health problem or refractive error.

However, when you have cataracts, that lens is cloudy, leading to blurry or dim vision. It looks almost as if you're looking through a fogged-up window, no matter where you are.

In the early stages, you may not notice a cataract because it progresses slowly. However, over time, it can make it difficult for you to see someone's face or drive. Up close tasks can be challenging as well.

Symptoms

Initially, the symptoms of cataracts may be mild. That's because a cataract will start out small. You may not be aware of any changes in your vision at that point. However, as it grows, you'll be more aware of an issue as the clouding changes the way light enters the eye and shines on the retina.

It becomes harder to see at night as cataracts worsen. You may have a sensitivity to glare and light. When you're reading, you may need more light to be able to see. You might notice halos around lights and see that colors don't look as vibrant. You may also experience your prescription changing frequently.

Treating Cataracts

We provide screening for cataracts. Our optometrist will ask you questions about your eye health, age, and lifestyle. Our optometrist will want to know about any vision troubles you have. We'll consider your age since your chances increase with age.

After your initial assessment, we might provide you with a visual acuity test. This is when you need to read lines of letters at different magnifications to see if you have a vision deficit. We may also use a magnifying device to look into your eye to assess for any clouding.

In the early stages, we'll focus on correcting your vision. We'll also continuously monitor your diagnosis. If our eye doctor notices that it's progressing too much, you may receive a referral for surgery to remove and replace the damaged lens.
